CSI's team has completed the Pacific consultation stage of the new project funded by AusAID for design of a regional program to build the capacity of NGOs in Pacific nations and Timor Leste.
The team consisted of Dr Deirdre O'Neill, who designed and directs the Pacific program at the Australia and New Zealand School of Government, Emele Duituturaga, a consultant from Fiji with wide experience in the Pacific, and Anne Measday, General Manager of CSI. The team visited Fiji, Tonga, PNG and Timor Leste and is grateful to the many people who generously gave their time to discuss the program.
The consultations provided background on the needs of NGOs and their leaders, and ideas for content and structure which will strongly influence design of the program. The discussions also gave the team a first-hand understanding of the context and the working environment for NGOs in the region while enabling the team to establish or build upon relationships in each country.
Practical insight was gained into what might work for such a program, including the elements of selection and of on-going support for participants. Discussions are now being held with organisations in Australia and a report will be prepared for AusAID in July with a view to running a pilot program in 2010.
