CSI research and teaching is set to flourish with two pivotal academic appointments announced by CEO Professor Peter Shergold this week.

Professor Mark Lyons has been appointed as Director of Research while Gianni Zappala will be an Associate Professor who will design and teach a course in the area of corporate responsibility and accountability.

"I am delighted that Mark and Gianni have joined us! They bring excellent reputations and breadth of experience which complements the strengths and knowledge of Cheryl Kernot," Professor Peter Shergold said.

Mark Lyons pioneered the study of nonprofit organisations and philanthropy in Australia. He has been a member of several government committees including the initial Prime Minister's Round Table on Business/Community Partnerships and the Australian Statistics Advisory Council. He participated in or led several international research projects on the third sector and philanthropy. After retiring from UTS he was appointed Adjunct Professor in the Business Faculty and remained an active researcher. He has a first class honours degree from the UNSW and a PhD from the Australian National University.

Gianni Zappala has held teaching and research appointments at the Universities of Sydney, Cambridge, Wollongong and the Australian National University.
