Message from Peter Shergold

It is with a great deal of regret that I have to announce that Mark Lyons has been forced to step down from CSI due to continued ill-health.  Mark has been our part- time Director of Research for the last year and has made a wonderful contribution to the Centre. His enormous knowledge, long experience and intellectual rigour – and his willingness to share his expertise with all of us at CSI – have proved of enormous benefit. We will miss him greatly and hope that, in the future, Mark will be able to find a role with the Centre once again.

In the meantime, I’m pulling out all the stops to recruit a full-time Director of Research. I hope I’ll be able to let you know the outcome in the next newsletter.

The Graduate Certificate in Social Impact is now available. It will be taught at each of our partner universities beginning in December at UNSW.  If you are interested in undertaking the Certificate or, perhaps, in attending one of the individual courses, please visit our website, read the details and select the business school you wish to attend. I don’t think you’ll regret your decision.

Perhaps our most exciting news is that The University of Western Australia last month became CSI’s fourth partner. The opening of CSI at UWA went exceptionally well. It’s great to have Michael Chaney chairing the WA Advisory Council and to have so much enthusiastic commitment from the Dean of the Business School, Tracey Horton. Thanks to the indomitable Elena Douglas for doing so much to bring this partnership to fruition. Read our news of the opening and view my speech at the opening.

Driving social impact where the sectors meet

We explore this important issue in two of our upcoming executive courses:-
Collaborative Leadership in a Shared Power World, led by Paul ‘t Hart is in Sydney on 9 & 10 November, and we have had a pleasing response. Peter Shergold, Cheryl Kernot, Claire Vickery (Butterfly Foundation) and Kate Carnell (Australian General Practice Network) will participate.

The Changing World of the Social Economy is a seminar on 28 October in Sydney hosted by the law firm Coleman & Greig. Peter Shergold, Cheryl Kernot and Gianni Zappala will present the seminar.

Our final course for this year is Planned Giving and Bequests being conducted in Melbourne on 18 November in conjunction with the Association of Development and Alumni Professionals in Education.

This year CSI ran 15 executive programs in Melbourne and Sydney and we look forward to offering an exciting suite of courses again next year.
