Message from Peter Shergold
I am delighted with the number of visitors from around the world who will be joining us at CSI over the next few months to share their experiences and learnings at our upcoming events and lectures.
Rajesh Tandon is the President of the Participatory Research Institute of Asia and an internationally acclaimed leader and practitioner of participatory research and development. Both last year and this year CSI provided scholarships to enable Australians to participate in his Indian program. Rajesh will be talking in Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney about the important questions of what true civic engagement means, and how to give people the power to participate in an inclusive and transparent manner. CSI is collaborating with Chain Reaction on this event.
Rt Hon David Blunkett MP was elected as the Member of Parliament for Sheffield Brightside in 1987. He became Secretary of State for Education and Employment in 1997, Home Secretary in 2001 and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in 2005. More recently he has undertaken work on anti poverty and affordable credit, social mobility and a review of the future role of the community and voluntary sector at the request of the Prime Minister. He will be speaking at a function organised in partnership with Vision Australia. Information on his seminar will be posted on the events page shortly.
The Qantas Foundation Social Impact lecture is rapidly becoming a major event on the CSI calendar. This year’s address will presented by Mark Rose, Global CEO of Fauna & Flora International (FFI), the world’s longest established international conservation organisation. One of Mark’s many achievements during his tenure at FFI has been to develop a brand of sustainable conservation aimed at genuinely developing local capacity. Mark will be talking in Sydney on the topic of “Making a business case for biodiversity”. He will also be presenting in Perth. More details will be posted on the events page soon.
Jon Huggett will be CSI’s inaugural John B Reid Visiting International Fellow. He will present a number of lectures and events for non profits, alumni and student audiences. Jon is an advisor to chief executives worldwide and has over 30 years of experience on six continents with businesses and nonprofits including at Bridgespan. Having recently also published a number of articles on decision making in non- profits, Jon is extremely well placed to present our next executive course on Decision Making for Third Sector CEOs in Sydney on 19-20 October. It will look at how teams can make better decisions more efficiently and more responsibly. Sign up now as places are filling fast!
We are also pleased to welcome Dr Thomas Schillemans to the CSI team as our first visiting research fellow. He’ll be with us for the next 3 months. Thomas is an Assistant Professor in public administration at the Utrecht School of Governance, Utrecht University, in the Netherlands. His research is focused on the interaction of executive agencies, regulators and third party organisations with stakeholders, and in particular the role of the media in public governance. We are looking forward to working more closely with Thomas over this time and will announce more details of Thomas’ events shortly. Peter Shergold, Macquarie Group Foundation Professor www.csi.edu.au
Leading learning Jon Huggett’s October 19-20 seminar on Decision making for third sector CEOs in Sydney is just one of the great learning for leadership opportunities we are proud to offer this year. Another is the return of Paul 't Hart’s highly acclaimed Collaborative leadership in a shared power world in Sydney on November 9 and 10. This course focuses on the competing priorities and practices which can bedevil co-operation between government, not-for-profit and business and offers insights and strategies to overcome them for social good. Find out more on our upcoming courses ...
Social economy seminar Coleman and Greig solicitors are hosting a seminar on “The Changing World of the Social Economy” in Sydney on October 28 featuring three CSI speakers: Peter Shergold will explore From Grants to Government Contracts to Individualised Budgets: Towards Engaged Citizenry; Cheryl Kernot will discuss From Not-for-Profits to Social Enterprises: the Promise of Social Innovation and Gianni Zappala will trace the evolution From Corporate Charity to Engaged Corporate Citizen: Emerging Possibilities. Register for the event.
Stay informed You can keep up with CSI’s research on our website, where we regularly post a range of papers in three categories: briefing papers (short summaries of topical third sector issues), background papers (longer reviews of academic commentary on a topic of interest), and issues papers (issues analysis at greater length and depth.) The latest additions include a co-written research paper by Gianni Zappala on “Why Do Companies Ignore Measuring Social Impact of their Corporate Community Involvement Programs”, and a fuller discussion of the “Managing in a Downturn “survey which attracted widespread media coverage on its release in July.
Yakety Yak Renowned businesswoman and women’s activist Eve Mahlab demonstrated the razor sharp insights and analysis which underpin her success, in conversation with Peter Thompson in Melbourne at last month’s Yakety Yak dinner. Among other things she talked about the Women Donors network which advocates targeted philanthropy for women and girls. Watch the interview. September’s Yakety Yak audience in Brisbane engaged in a lively conversation with Sue Gordon, former WA Children’s Court magistrate and former head of the Northern Territory Intervention. The video will be posted shortly. In November, Treasury Secretary Ken Henry and Arthur Sinodinos, who was chief of staff to the former Prime Minister John Howard and who is currently with the NAB will join the Yakety Yak conversation.
Farewell to Danielle Begg We say a sad farewell to Danielle Begg who is the Projects Manager at CSI. Danielle is commencing studies at Oxford in October. She will undertake a Masters of Science in Comparative Social Policy and will be at St Hilda’s College. Danielle has been a critical part of the success of CSI in its first 18 months. We wish her well with her study and thank her for her very substantial contribution.

Success in great measure We were extremely lucky to have Les Hems share his insights from the UK as a world leader in research to develop an evidence base for the third sector. His well-attended sessions in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane discussed third sector transparency, accountability and performance measurement in the 21st century and the power of intelligent corporate social responsibility. We hope to continue working with Les on these important issues.
Social innovation camp Do you have a bright idea for creating social good using the Internet? If so, we’d love you to submit your idea to the Social innovation camp. CSI is a major sponsor of this initiative which aims to bring together social innovation with big ideas, and technical experts in web development, business and marketing who can help bring these ideas to life. The Social Innovation Camp will be held in Sydney in March 2010.
Public sector summit The public sector confronts a myriad of challenges for renewal and reform at a time of new focus on social innovation, demands for greater accountability and unprecedented citizen engagement. CSI in partnership with CISCO is hosting a public service summit for 70 invited public sector thought leaders in Victoria in February to chart a path forward. We will keep you informed of developments and outcomes.
